How To DJ: Learn To Mix Like A Pro With Our Brief, Easy To Read Guide.

This website will give you an introduction into how to DJ. We will cover the basics of beat matching showing you how to mix two tracks of the same genre together in sync so that it sounds good to the ear and good to the people dancing in a club.

Equipment.

This is the basic set up you will need when learning to DJ. Most of these can be bought second hand in good condition for a reasonable price. It is important thought to get the best set up available to you as quality differs quite a lot.

How To Mix.

The aim of a mix is to blend two different songs of the same genre together in perfect synch. This means they both have to be playing at the same BPM (Beats Per Minute) as each other so the kicks, hats and snares all line up. To do this you use a technique known as beat matching. If this is not done in perfect time you will get a clanging noise which you don’t want to be hearing.

How To Beat Match.

To beat match you need to have one track playing on one deck on the main speakers with the other track ready to cue up in the headphones. With one track playing out loud you can cue the track in your headphones up and release it on the drop of the track playing out loud. On the drop you will be able to hear the track in your headphones that you are mixing and the track playing out loud. Using the pitch control you can speed up or slow down the track in your headphone to get it in perfect time with the track playing on the speaker. You will know when the both tracks are playing in time as the kicks will both land at the same time.

The Mix.

Once both tracks are times up and playing at the same time as each other you can then mix them in together. As the track plays out loud on the speakers you cue the new track up in your headphones ready to release it on the drop. On the drop you release the second track playing in your headphones and listen to make sure both tracks are playing in time. After 8 bars you can start to move the cross fader on the mixer into the middle. This allows both tracks to merge together. If you successfully beat matched the two track it will sound good and you will be able to switch the cross fader over when appropriate. Thats basically how to DJ and how to mix.
